Notes on Politics


Missionary Party: Party whose principle aim is to converts for its ideologies, not to maximize its votes so as to win election.

Broker Party: party whose main goal is to win elections. Ideologically nutrual party

Nomination:The legal procedures by which election authorities certify certain persons as qualified candidates for office and print their names on the official ballot.

Candidate selection: The mainly extralegal process by which political parties decide which persons will be designated on the ballot and in election communications as their recommended candidates.

  • First-Past-the-Post
  • Absolute Majority Systems: 50 % + 1

  • Multimember-Proportional System
  • Party-List System: Parties are the mainly units of representation
  • The Single-Transferable-Vote System: prioritise in individual candidtates

  • Apportionment: The process of assigning to local areas the number of representatives each will elect to the central legislature

    Referendums: Election in which questions of public policy are voted upon directly by ordinary citizen.
